Energy transition began in Freiburg 35 years ago. In order to reduce energy consumption, the world's first ecological neighbourhoods were planned here in the early 1990s. Using all energy sources such as wind, water, sun and earth: tried-and-tested concepts and award-winning projects can be found here. The new plus-energy town hall is just one of many. Even the soccer stadium is climate-neutral. By 2030, the city aims to generate 40 percent of its total electricity requirements within the city limits (currently around 15 percent). To achieve this, additional wind turbines are being built and a PV offensive is underway. A geothermal power plant is also planned.
