Too many cars clog up our cities – Freiburg has managed to keep the number of cars at comparatively low level, while cycling has increased significantly. The net of cycle highways is currently being developed, making cycling not only cheaper and healthier, but also faster than car-use. The tram network is currently being expanded in all directions, with the aim of providing all residents with at least one tram stop within 400 metres of their home.
The result is of this policy is pleasant for pedestrians, safe for children and attractive for businesses. The entire city centre is a pedestrian zone, which also attracts strollers and shoppers from the surrounding areas and France or Switzerland.
A tour around the main railway station to the city centre complements the lecture and illustrates how Freiburg's transport policy works.
