By 2030, the city of Freiburg aims to generate 40 percent of its total electricity requirements with renewables, within the city limits (currently around 15 percent). To achieve this, old wind turbines have been repowered (and now generate four times as much electricity as before) and additional ones have been built. The PV offensive is supported by the campaign ‘Your roof can do more’. A geothermal power plant is also planned. Both new districts currently in the planning and construction stages, Kleineschholz and Dietenbach, are to be zero emission.
