Sealed surfaces in urban areas are good for car traffic – but they do not create attractive spaces inviting people to linger and socialize. On the contrary. Plus they cannot absorb rain (and thus prevent flooding) and they heat up significantly in summer – climate change adaptation means, at best, unsealing and greening, thereby revaluating streets and places. Poor public space planning can lead to insecurity and isolation, while a lively and attractive public space significantly increases the quality of life in the neighbourhood – the two ecological districts of Vauban and Rieselfeld are excellent examples of attractive and green streets, courts and green spaces, that encourage the inhabitants to communicate and create bonds.
